A heat box will assist in accelerating the drying of most paints and will also prevent
that ever present dust from settling on and ruining the wet paint surface. I made
the box from a product called Melamine, it is a 16mm thick particle board coated
on both sides with a hard white coating, this material is used in cabinet making.
Dimensions will vary depending on your own available space but a good size is 500mm
high - 400mm wide and 250mm deep. A hinged door the full size of the frontal area
- 500 x 400 - with a latch makes loading and unloading the box very easy. A common
household light socket is mounted in the centre of the base and a 60 watt bulb fitted
(just a normal household light bulb). A small hole through the back will take care
of the electrical lead I fitted two wire racks for hanging small parts and to place
larger items on, the floor can also be used but being close to the bulb it will be
hotter. My box will heat up to 50 degrees Celsius which I find to be a good temperature.,
if you experience excess heat simply change the light bulb to a lower wattage. It
is advisable to place thin wooden strips or cardboard on the wire racks before putting
any plastic kit parts there, the wire can become quite hot and may cause damage to
the plastic, I have not had this happen but it is better to be safe. This is a very
simple box to build, works extremely well and does not take up much room. The internal
layout suits my needs but you can place as many racks as you feel necessary, remember,
don’t use a solid shelf, the heat needs to rise through the wire rack.
A very simple to make but very affective heat box will make light work of your paint
drying problems, also prevents dust settling on your newly painted surface
